Black and white photography is a form of art which take you back in those days when pictures were taken without any colour other than black and white. Since the introduction of colour, these black and white negatives became costly and unprofitable for the business.

These days because of the digital cameras, this form of art has again popularised. Also with the help of picture editing software like Adobe Photoshop, it is easy to produce excellent quality work that was only possible with the help of specified camera. Digital camera has made life very easy. Now everybody can take colour pictures and convert them to black and white with the help of editing software. Because of this, the cost of photography has dropped a lot.

Although, cameras still possess the monochrome feature but in order to achieve the best results colour images are converted into black and white using popular image editing softwares like Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.

These black and white pictures rely on the level of contrast and texture quality of the image.

Monochrome photography doesn’t mean there are only two colours black and white, but actually there are millions of shades available between these two colours. That is why when pictures is presented in grey, it becomes entirely different from the one in colour.

The B&W image allow the wide range of greys and midtones to display the contrast and texture available between various objects in the image. It also helps to produce realm in the photograph as compared to the one without so much contrast, also known as a ‘flat’ image.

While developing an image one needs to have a good eye to see the shades of the B&W image and also identify which colour shade should be used to bring best contrasting results.

In B&W pictures, shadows play an important role in defining shapes, structures and feel. It is so much important to be able to read shadows to become a good B&W photographer.

As it was the case in past when films were in use, colour filter were used to add contrast and also to increase the intensity of certain colour spectrum. Same method is used in black and white digital pictures, there are colour channels available for every colour to convert them them into B&W

There are many photographers who specialises in black and white photography. Because of so much colour everywhere, a black and white picture looks very beautiful and though provoking at the same time. It usually takes a person deep inside it. These days there are lot of exhibition being held in plane black and white form of art. It is helpful if a person goes well prepared before going on photographic mission. Check lights and shadows as well.
